When to apply
Put your application in no earlier than six months before you want payments to start — but don't leave it late either. A claim made after your chosen start date can only be backdated by six months, so applying late can cost you money you were entitled to.
Choose your start date
The application asks for the date you would like the pension to start — any point between your 66th and 70th birthday. Starting later means a higher weekly rate for life, so it is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting to 66. See when you can claim and how deferring works.
How to apply
There are two ways to make your claim:
- Online
- The quickest route is through MyWelfare.ie, using a verified MyGovID account. You can complete and submit the application there.
- By post
- Complete the paper application form for the State Pension (Contributory) — form SPC 1 — available from gov.ie, your local Intreo centre, or any post office, and send it to the Department.
What you'll need
- Your PPS number
- Your bank or financial institution details for payment
- Proof of identity and address if requested
- Details of any time you worked or lived abroad (this can affect how your record is assessed)
- Your marriage or civil partnership details if you are claiming an increase for a dependent spouse or partner
It helps to check your PRSI record before you apply — you can request your Contribution Statement free from MyWelfare.ie. That way you know roughly what to expect. Our calculator turns those figures into an estimated weekly amount.
What happens after you apply
The Department checks your PRSI record and works out your rate under the Total Contributions Approach (and, during the transition, the yearly average method — paying whichever is higher). They will write to you with their decision and the weekly amount. If you think the assessment is wrong, you can ask for it to be reviewed or appeal it.
